Bookblogged!: Double Love (Sweet Valley High #1) by Francine Pascal

Title: Double Love (Sweet Valley High #1)
Author: Francine Pascal
Genre: YA Fiction/ Teen Romance/ Teen Drama

Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield are blonde, blue-eyed, small-waisted, tanned twin sisters who have their sights on the same guy, Todd Wilkins.  Elizabeth is sensible and very fair.  She is simply a nice girl who is the editor of Sweet Valley High’s newspaper.  She writes the “Eyes and Ears” column which covers the rumors and gossip of SVH.  Her sister Jessica is the total opposite of her personality-wise.  She is wild, outrageous, and goes out with just about all the jocks of SVH.  She gets in trouble one night when she accompanies bad boy Rick Andover to a bar where only grownups are allowed.  She does not correct the police officer who saves her that night from Andover when he calls her Elizabeth.  The police officer only knows the twins’ father Ned Wakefield who is a lawyer and Elizabeth.  The next day at school, all of Sweet Valley High gossip about Elizabeth as the bad girl who went with Andover.  When Elizabeth hears the rumors she is devastated while Todd is furious and angry with her.  He ends up asking Jessica to the upcoming dance because he is touched when Jessica confesses to him that she was the actual twin in the Andover event.  He finds Jessica heroic and noble for taking the blame.  Little does he know that it’s Jessica who did go to the adult bar with Rick Andover.

In the end, Elizabeth is the winning twin and Jessica suffers (good naturedly) for the Andover mix-up.  Elizabeth and Todd go out as a teenage couple at Sweet Valley High from then on. Also in this book, the twins are accepted into the Pi Beta Alpha sorority which is only made up of the coolest, snobbiest, outgoing girls of SVH.  Another subplot in this book is the twins’ mistaking their father of having an affair with one of his junior lawyers at his law firm, Marianna West.  Finally, in this same book, Steven, the twins’ older sibling comes home more often from college to spend time with Tricia Martin, a girl from Sweet Valley’s notorious Martin family who is made up of a drunkard for a father and a slut (Tricia’s younger sister Betsy) for a daughter.  Tricia herself is a sweet, good girl and Steven likes her and does invite her over for dinner with his family towards the end of the novel.

This book is the 1st book in the Sweet Valley High franchise.  It gets readers acquainted with Elizabeth and Jessica, their big brother Steven and their parents Ned and Alice Wakefield.  It also includes their friends Enid Rollins, Lila Fowler, Bruce Patman, Ken Matthews, and many others that will make appearances in the upcoming books in this 80s and 90s YA series.  I was introduced to the whole Sweet Valley world by an elementary school friend by the name of Sarah who lend me her Sweet Valley Twins and Friends book, The Big Party Weekend.  I instantly fell in love with the twins because they were so adventurous and outgoing.  Sweet Valley Twins and Friends was a middle grade version of the high school-y Sweet Valley High.  I collect Sweet Valley High and Sweet Valley Twins (and Friends) because they take me back to an era in my life that has gone on to antiquity.  I miss the 80s and 90s so much and would do anything to relive those decades all over again.

2020 Book Review #3: ONE OF US IS LYING by KAREN M. MCMANUS

Title: One of Us Is Lying
Author: Karen M. McManus
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Publication Date: May 30, 2017
Genres: YA Fiction/ Mysteries & Thrillers
Available from AMAZON or BARNES AND NOBLE

What I liked about Karen M. McManus’ One of Us Is Lying (SPOILER ALERT)

·         The inclusion of teenage issues like: Social Media, homosexuality, drug abuse, bullying, etc.
·         The idea for the killer is fresh and original.
·          The characters Cooper Clay and Adelaide Prentiss.
·         The setting the book takes place in, the state of California
·         The themes of family love and support in the book.

What I disliked about Karen M. McManus’ One of Us Is Lying (SPOILER ALERT)

·         Its resemblance to Sara Shepard’s Pretty Little Liars books.

Jamz Talks

No words to truly convey what I feel about this book but just that it was alright, the ending was not that much of a shock.  What kept me reading this book to the end was its cute and entertaining teenage culture.  It’s nostalgic for me because at that age I was in the middle of the same issues except cell phones and social media.  The thought that maybe Karen McManus stole the whole concept from Pretty Little Liars was nagging at my mind but since no allegations of plagiarism came up, I guess I should just shut up and end this discussion.  I gave this book three stars over at Goodreads because that’s my honest opinion about it.  For those who grew up on RL Stine and Francine Pascal and then Pretty Little Liars, this book and its plot may seem redundant.  But anyway, peace to all you fans and of course the author herself, Karen M. McManus.  Off-topic notes: I bought this on discount from Amazon online.  Its sequel, One of Us Is Next was released just days ago.  Alright, I’m out!

Best regards.

2020 Book Review #2: A WALK TO REMEMBER by NICHOLAS SPARKS

Title: A Walk to Remember
Author: Nicholas Sparks
Publication Date: June 25, 2019 (Not first edition)
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
Genre: YA Fiction/ Romance/ Historical Fiction
Available from AMAZON or BARNES AND NOBLE

5 Things I liked about Nicholas Sparks’ A Walk to Remember
1.      Its spiritual themes and religious plot
2.      It’s short and sweet in length.
3.      Its endearing lead characters: Jamie Sullivan and Landon Carter
4.      Its ultimate lesson of eternal love
5.      Its small-town setting

3 Things I disliked about Nicholas Sparks’ A Walk to Remember
1.      Its sad ending
2.      The depressingly moody character, Mr. Hegbert
3.      Its simplicity which can also be a positive point.

Jamz’ Talks:

I found this book to be quite an easy read and one that is riveting and passionate.  I especially enjoyed the character of Jamie Sullivan who is a nice, Bible-touting girl so naïve and yet also smart and sadly on the way to an inevitable fate.  I also found the character of Landon Carter to be fascinating because this book came out recently and yet its themes and plot were spiritual.  To have a bestselling author like Nicholas Sparks come up with such a story is a rare thing indeed.  I mean, in a time where such topics are frowned upon, this novel defies that.  I think the lesson here that this book taught me as a reader was: “eternal love.” That no matter what happens to a relationship of romance and/or love, if you truly love someone, you will never forget about him or her no matter what and that the memories you share(d) will live on.  I gave this wonderful book 5 stars on Goodreads because it deserves that and because it was downright relatable.  Thank you and have a great and cozy winter day!

Best regards,

me

Song/Video: Let There Be Peace On Earth

Today I feature this song on here to meditate on the current event of what's going on in the Middle East and with the American troops and President.
My prayer is that I hope the Lord God intervenes and does something about it.  I don't want the world to go into another world war so I am really sad and agitated about it all.  In the meantime, all I want for 2020 are the things I've listed two posts ago and world peace.

May the video above be an impetus for us to pray for world peace and to come together as one.

Much love and prayers,

me
